SETAC had an even bigger presence in this year’s Vallarta Pride week of festivities than normal! For the first time, we sponsored and organized the Púlpito Drag Derby, which drew more than 750 participants to the Zona Romántica to watch eight local contestants race to see who would be crowned this year’s queen! All hail Mizz Peaches, representing La Noche bar, who was crowned this year’s winner!
In addition to the Derby, SETAC also sponsored the annual AIDS Candlelight Vigil, which took place this year at the foot of the famed Los Muertos Pier. Participants each lit a candle in memory of someone lost to the AIDS crisis.
We sponsored a float in the annual Pride Parade, which this year featured SETAC’s accountant Nahum Santiago with his husband, Francisco, showing off their wedding rings after their marriage earlier this year. This tribute to same-sex marriage made quite a stir with onlookers.
And finally, at the end of Pride Week, we held a Health Fair in Lázaro Cárdenas Park, handing out several thousand condoms and conducting HIV tests with rapid results on the spot.
